Origin: A borrowing from Hebrew. Etymon: Hebrew pārāšāh.
Etymology: < Hebrew pārāšāh (plural pārāšiyyōṯ) division, portion of the Torah < pāraš to divide.The forms parsha, pasha, and persha probably arise from colloquial contraction of medial syllable.
Judaism.
In Jewish liturgy: each of several portions of the Torah read at a Sabbath morning synagogue service; these portions collectively, a sedra (see Sedra n.).In modern Jewish use, applied spec. to the section of the weekly lesson publicly recited in the Synagogue by a Jewish youth at the age of 13, when he becomes Bar-Mitzvah. In this sense colloquial forms (see above) are used.
