Etymology: < South African Dutch pas op, imperative of oppassen to take care, be careful (17th cent. in Dutch; compare Middle Dutch passen op , and also German regional (Low German) uppassen , German aufpassen (18th cent.), all in the same sense) < op- up- prefix + passen to fit (Middle Dutch passen to measure off; < pas step, pace < Old French pas : see pace n.¹).
