Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek παρασύνεσις.
Etymology: < ancient Greek παρασύνεσις misunderstanding < παρα- para- prefix1 + σύνεσις understanding < συνιέναι to understand ( < συν- syn- prefix + ἱέναι to send: see paresis n.) + -σις -sis suffix. N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (pærăsi·nĭsis) /pærəˈsɪnɪsɪs/.
Linguistics. Obsolete. rare.
Misunderstanding or misconception of a word, resulting in an alteration or corruption of it.
