单词 paravant
释义

paravantadv.n.

Forms: 1500s paravaunt, 1600s paravant.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French paravant.
Etymology: < Middle French, French †paravant before in time or place (c1243 in Old French as par avant ) < par through, by, be- (see per prep.) + avant before (see avant- comb. form). Compare Old French, Middle French, French auparavant, in the same sense.
Obsolete. rare.
Before; first; pre-eminently. Also as n.: a pre-eminent person or thing.Originally and chiefly in the works of Edmund Spenser. In quot. 1637 Heywood appears to have misinterpreted Spenser's use as adjectival, and hence used the adjective elliptically as a noun.
