Etymology: < classical Latin parazōnium dagger worn on the belt (Martial) < Hellenistic Greek παραζώνιον < ancient Greek παρα- para- prefix1 + ζώνη girdle, belt (see zone n.) + -ιον , diminutive suffix. Compare also Hellenistic Greek παραζωνίδιον dagger worn on the belt. Compare earlier parazone n.
A small sword or dagger worn on the belt by the ancient Greeks and (later) the Romans. Cf. parazone n.
