Etymology: < Portuguese †pardao (1514; now (hist.) pardau) < Indo-Persian partāb (perhaps in Konkani vernacular form partāv, with pronunciation partāo) < Sanskrit pratāpa splendour, brilliancy, majesty (occurring as a royal name on some of the coins); compare Hindi pratap.In forms pardaw , pardawe after Dutch (now hist.) pardauw (1596 in the passage translated in quot. 1598¹; also 1641–2 as pardou , 1724–6 as pardao , pardeau , pardau , 1900 as pardo ). In form pardai after French †pardai (1659 in the passage translated in quot. 1662), itself perhaps after Italian pardai (plural; 1504).
