Origin: A borrowing from Portuguese. Etymon: Portuguese pardao.
Etymology: < Portuguese †pardao (1514; now (hist.) pardau) < Indo-Persian partāb (perhaps in Konkani vernacular form partāv, with pronunciation partāo) < Sanskrit pratāpa splendour, brilliancy, majesty (occurring as a royal name on some of the coins); compare Hindi pratap.In forms pardaw , pardawe after Dutch (now hist.) pardauw (1596 in the passage translated in quot. 15981; also 1641–2 as pardou , 1724–6 as pardao , pardeau , pardau , 1900 as pardo ). In form pardai after French †pardai (1659 in the passage translated in quot. 1662), itself perhaps after Italian pardai (plural; 1504).
Now historical.
Any of various, usually silver, coins or monetary units used in the Portuguese colonies of India, esp. Goa, from the 16th to the 19th centuries, and usually said to be equivalent to 300 or 360 reis (cf. quot. 1903).
