Etymology: < Mexican Spanish pascola (1850; 1849 in form pascol ) < Yaqui pahko'ola (plural pahko'olam ), literally ‘old man of the ceremony’ < pahko ceremony + o'ola old man, perhaps influenced by Spanish Pascua Easter (see pasch n.), owing to the fact that these dances were often performed at Easter time.The forms pahkowla, pahkola(m), pahko'ola(m), pakolam, directly transcribing the Yaqui word, are also found in English contexts.

Performers may also act as hosts and general entertainers at the celebrations. Their masks usually represent a goat.
