Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish pascola.
Etymology: < Mexican Spanish pascola (1850; 1849 in form pascol ) < Yaqui pahko'ola (plural pahko'olam ), literally ‘old man of the ceremony’ < pahko ceremony + o'ola old man, perhaps influenced by Spanish Pascua Easter (see pasch n.), owing to the fact that these dances were often performed at Easter time.The forms pahkowla, pahkola(m), pahko'ola(m), pakolam, directly transcribing the Yaqui word, are also found in English contexts.

A traditional Yaqui dance usually performed at festivals and weddings; a performer of this dance.The dance consists of a rhythmic shuffling of the feet performed to music by one or more masked men wearing rattles around their ankles. Performers may also act as hosts and general entertainers at the celebrations. Their masks usually represent a goat.
