Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Spanish, combined with an English element; modelled on a Spanish lexical item. Partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: Spanish pascua , -an suffix; French Pascuan.

Etymology: Partly < Spanish pascua Easter (see pasch n.) in the name of Isla de Pascua Easter Island (see note below) + -an suffix, after Spanish pascuense Pascuense n., and partly < French Pascuan (see quot. 1935, and compare quot. 1940 at sense A. 1), itself < Spanish pascua + French -an -an suffix. Compare Pascuense n., Pascuense adj.The island was visited and named on Easter day 1722 by the Dutch explorer Jacob Roggeveen; it was claimed by Spain in 1770 (when it was temporarily renamed San Carlos), and since 1888 has been administered by Chile. Compare the following:1754 New Universal Hist. Voy. & Trav. xxii. 320 They arrived at a small island about 16 leagues in extent, which they called Pasch, or Easter Island, from the day on which it was discovered.1935 H.
