Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin parēns patriae.
Etymology: < classical Latin parēns patriae, literally ‘parent of the country’ < parēns parent n. + patriae , genitive of patria patria n. Compare earlier parent of the state (see quot. 1700 at parent n. 1c).Attested earlier as an unassimilated loan:1590 Tarltons Newes out of Purgatorie 12 I spied written ouer his head in great Caracters this stile: Papa, Pater, Parens Patriæ, [etc.].
Law.
The sovereign, or any other authority, regarded as the guardian or legal protector of citizens considered to be unable to protect themselves. Now also: the principle that political authority carries with it the responsibility for such protection.
