Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin parentāt-, parentāre.
Etymology: < classical Latin parentāt-, past participial stem (compare -ate suffix3) of parentāre to perform the rites at the tombs of the dead, especially relations < parent- , parēns parent n. Compare Middle French parenter (15th cent. in this sense).
Obsolete.
intransitive. To celebrate the funeral rites of parents or relations. Hence, in extended use: to perform funeral rites, offer obsequies to.
