Etymology: < post-classical Latin pareticus (1780 or earlier) < Hellenistic Greek πάρετος relaxed, palsied ( < the stem of ancient Greek παριεναι to let go, relax (see paresis n.) + -τος , suffix forming verbal adjectives) + -icus -ic suffix. Compare Hellenistic Greek παρετικός (rare) palsied. Compare French parétique, adjective (1865).
