Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: parget v., -er suffix1; French porgeteur.
Etymology: Partly < parget v. + -er suffix1, and partly < Middle French (Liège) porgeteur plasterer (14th cent.; compare French regional (Walloon) pordjèteû). Compare post-classical Latin pargettator, pargettor (1314, 1418 respectively in British sources).
1. A plasterer. Formerly also: †a whitewasher (obsolete). Now chiefly historical.
