Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin particata.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin particata, variant of perticata linear measure, square measure (10th cent.; frequently c1150–1567 in British sources) < classical Latin pertica perch n.1 + -āta -ate suffix1. Compare Anglo-Norman perchee , perchet , Middle French perchee (1256 in Old French). Compare bovate n., carucate n. N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (pā·ɹtikĕt) /ˈpɑːtɪkət/.
Scottish. Obsolete.
Originally: a linear measure for land equal to six Scottish ells (18½ feet, approx. 5.64 metres). Later: a unit of land area equal to 40 falls (fall n.2 23a) or 13,690 square feet (approx. 1359 square metres), i.e. a quarter of a Scottish acre; (also) a piece of land of this size.
