Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin participativus ; Latin participāt- , participāre , -ive suffix.
Etymology: Either < post-classical Latin participativus (in logic) involving participation (from 12th cent. in British sources), or independently < classical Latin participāt-, past participial stem of participāre participate v. + -ive suffix. Compare French participatif (1868). Compare earlier participatively adv.
