Origin: A borrowing from Pali. Etymon: Pali parinibbāna.
Etymology: < Pali parinibbāna < pari- (see Parinirvana n.) + nibbāna nibbana n. Compare Parinirvana n.The rare English variant parinibbanan probably reflects the inflected Pali form Parinibbānaṃ (in the title of the Parinibbānaṃ suttaṃ, the text paraphrased in quot. 1848 and cited in the same English source in the form Parinibbánansuttan).
Buddhism.
The highest state of or final passage into nirvana (nirvana n. 1(a)), esp. that which a Buddha or enlightened being enters at death. Frequently with reference to the death of the historical Buddha, Siddhārtha Gautama. Cf. Parinirvana n., nibbana n.Esp. in Theravada Buddhism.
