Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French passéisme.
Etymology: < French passéisme (1930) < passé the past (see passéist adj. and n.) + -isme -ism suffix, after Italian passatismo (F. T. Marinetti et al. Contro Venezia passatista (1910) in Manifesti del futurismo (1914) 32). Compare earlier passéist adj., passéist n.
A deprecated adherence to and regard for the traditions and values of the past, esp. in the arts. Chiefly opposed to futurism.

1986 F. Spalding Brit. Art since 1900 ii. 49 In the Observer on 7 June 1914 he [sc. C. R. W. Nevinson] published ‘Vital English Art, Futurist Manifesto’, written in collaberation with Marinetti. It deplored the passéism of much English art.
