Etymology: < French passéiste (1913) < passé the past (1524; use as noun of passé , past participle: see passé adj.) + -iste -ist suffix, after Italian passatista (F. T. Marinetti et al. Contro Venezia passatista (1910) in Manifesti del futurismo (1914) 32). Compare passéism n.

Having an excessive regard for the traditions and values of the past; backward-looking. Chiefly in contrast to futurist.
