Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pastel.
Etymology: < Middle French pastel woad (1393; French pastel ) < Occitan pastèl (13th–14th cent. in Old Occitan as pastel ) < pasta paste n. + -el -el suffix2, so called because the plant was pounded to a paste which could then be used for dyeing. Compare Catalan pastell (1249), post-classical Latin pastellum (from 1332), Spanish pastel (1421 or earlier; < Catalan or Occitan), Italian pastello (16th cent.; now rare).
Now historical.
Blue dye obtained from the plant woad, Isatis tinctoria. Also: the plant itself.

Etymology: < Italian pastello crayon made of pigment paste (a1571), art of drawing with pastels (a1600 or earlier), drawing made in pastel (1721), either extended use of pastello little cake (14th–15th cent.: see pastler n.), or < pasta paste n. + -ello -ello suffix. Compare ( < Italian) French pastel crayon made of pigment paste (1676), drawing made in pastel (1694).The adjective use is not paralleled in French and Italian until later. The forms show considerable overlap with pastille n.
