Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: proper name Pasteur , -ize suffix.
Etymology: < the name of Louis Pasteur (see Pasteur n.) + -ize suffix, after French pasteuriser (1872 in sense 1). With sense 1 compare German pasteurisieren (1888 or earlier as †pasteurisiren ), Italian pastorizzare (1895, with alteration after pastore pastor n.; also (rare) pasteurizzare ). Compare pasteurized adj.Sense 2 is apparently not attested in French. Compare earlier Pasteur treatment n. at Pasteur n. 2, Pasteurism n., pasteurization n.
