Origin: A borrowing from Arabic. Etymon: Arabic beṣṭila.
Etymology: < Moroccan Arabic beṣṭila < Spanish pastel pasty, meat pie (a1450) < Middle French pastel (see pastler n.).It is unclear whether the initial p- of the α. forms results from association with words in Romance languages or with English pasty n. The form bsteeya apparently implies a pronunciation influenced by association with Spanish words in -illa or French words in -ille.
In Moroccan cookery: a type of meat pie, often made with pigeon and typically having a sweet crust.
