Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French paen, paien.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman paen, paeen, paien, pain, pagen, pagien and Old French, Middle French paien (also attested in Middle French as paian , payen ; French païen ), adjective and noun, (person) adhering to the polytheism of classical antiquity (c881 as pagiens ), (person) of non-Christian and non-Jewish faith, in early use especially of Muslims (c1100), impious (13th cent.) < post-classical Latin paganus pagan n. Compare Old Occitan paian, pagan (c1070 as adjective and noun), Catalan pagà (c1200 as adjective and noun), Spanish pagano (late 10th cent. as adjective, 12th or 13th cent. as noun), Portuguese pagão (13th cent. as noun), Italian pagano (end of 12th cent. as adjective, end of 13th cent. as noun). In form paigien probably influenced by pagan n. Earlier currency of the word is perhaps implied in personal names and in (originally patronymic) surnames, as Reginaldus filius Pain (1185), John Pane (1190), although it is unclear whether these are to be interpreted as reflecting the Middle English or Anglo-Norman word.
