Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin pastoralitas ; pastoral adj., -ity suffix.
Etymology: Originally < post-classical Latin pastoralitas shepherding (9th cent. in a British source), office of pastor (10th cent.; c1125 in a British source) < classical Latin pāstōrālis pastoral adj. + -tās (see -ty suffix1; compare -ity suffix). In later use directly < pastoral adj. + -ity suffix. Compare Middle French pastoralité profession of a shepherd (1566).
