Origin: Of multiple origins. A borrowing from Portuguese. Partly also a borrowing from Spanish. Etymons: Portuguese pataca; Spanish pataca.
Etymology: < Portuguese pataca (16th cent.), probably < Old Occitan patac (1404; compare post-classical Latin pataquus (1362 in source from Provence)), or perhaps < the related Italian patacca (14th cent.), feminine form corresponding to patacco (mid 14th cent.; attested indirectly by the derivative patachina (1327; perhaps already in 1254)); further etymology uncertain. Compare Spanish pataca (1577), Catalan patac (1339), Middle French patac (1448; 1374 in plural patas ), and also Old Occitan patat (1361), post-classical Latin patatius (1343 in a document from Provence), Old Occitan patar (1348), post-classical Latin patarus (1460 in documents from Provence). Compare patard n., patacon n.In later use (e.g. in quot. 1981 at sense 1) also occasionally < Spanish pataca.
