Etymology: < peculiar adj. + -ity suffix. With sense 1 compare earlier peculiarness n.In sense 5 < peculiar n. + -ity suffix; compare slightly earlier peculiarism n. a.
1. The quality of being peculiar to or characteristic of an individual person or thing. Also: that which is peculiar to an individual person or thing; a distinguishing or special characteristic.In later use not easily distinguishable from sense 4.
