Etymology: < Anglo-Norman pecunie (first half of the 12th cent.), Anglo-Norman and Middle French pecune (c1200 in Old French; also in Anglo-Norman as pecuinne and in Old and Middle French as peccune ; French pécune , now rare), and its etymon classical Latin pecūnia money (see pecunial adj.); compare -y suffix3. Compare Old Occitan pecunia (1315; Occitan pecunha), Catalan pecúnia (13th cent.), Spanish pecunia (1246–52 or earlier), Portuguese pecunia (15th cent.; 1403 as peconja), Italian pecunia (13th cent.). N.E.D. (1904) indicates the stress as ˈpecuny.
Obsolete (Scottish in later use).
