Etymology: < pedagogy n. + -ist suffix. Compare French pédagogiste (1845), German †Pädagogist (1811 or earlier). N.E.D. (1904) gives only the pronunciation (pe·dăgǫdʒist) /ˈpɛdəɡɒdʒɪst/.
