Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin Pergamēnus; Greek Περγαμηνός.
Etymology: < (i) classical Latin Pergamēnus or its etymon (ii) Hellenistic Greek Περγαμηνός of or relating to Pergamum or its inhabitants < ancient Greek Πέργαμος , in Hellenistic Greek also Πέργαμον (classical Latin Pergamum , Pergamon , Pergamos ), name of a city and capital of an ancient kingdom in Asia Minor (now Bergama in Turkey) + -ηνός -ene suffix. With use as noun compare classical Latin Pergamēnī (plural) inhabitants of Pergamum. Compare earlier Pergamenian n., Pergamenian adj.Pergamum occurs as a place name in English contexts from Old English onwards.
