Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin patellula.
Etymology: < scientific Latin patellula (E. Acharius Methodus qua Omnes Detectos Lichenes (1803) p. xii) < classical Latin patella patella n. + -ula -ula suffix.
Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
A small patelliform structure, as in a lichen (cf. patella n. 2(c)) or a dytiscid water beetle (cf. patella n. 2(b)).
