Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: paten n., -er suffix1.
Etymology: < paten n. + -er suffix1, after post-classical Latin patenarius acolyte who holds up the empty paten (c1320, 1439 in British sources). N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (pæ·tĕnəɹ) /ˈpætənə(r)/.
Christian Church. Obsolete (historical and rare).
In the medieval church: an acolyte who held up the empty paten during a part of High Mass.
