Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek παθητός , -ism suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek παθητός passive (see pathetic adj.) + -ism suffix.Apparently coined by La Roy Sunderland (the first editor of the New York Magnet: see quots. 18431 at main sense) at about the same time that J. Braid was introducing the term hypnotism n. Compare French pathétisme the quality of being pathetic (1740).
