Etymology: < pea n.2 + tree n.
1. Any of various shrubs or trees of the family Fabaceae ( Leguminosae) with flowers resembling those of the cultivated pea, Pisum sativum; spec.: (a) any of various usually spiny and yellow-flowered shrubs or small trees constituting the genus Caragana of central and eastern Asia, esp. (more fully Siberian pea tree) C. sibirica, native to Siberia and Manchuria and often grown for ornament; (b) any of various shrubs or trees of the tropical genus Sesbania (cf. swamp pea-tree n. at swamp n. Compounds 6). Frequently with distinguishing word.coral pea-tree: see coral n.1 Compounds 2.
