In later use popularized by a variant (first attested 1844) of an earlier nursery rhyme (2nd half of 18th cent.) beginning: ‘Pease porridge hot, pease porridge cold..’ (compare pease porridge n. at pease n. Compounds 2a) with porridge replaced by pudding.
