Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: pease n., pudding n.
Etymology: < pease n. + pudding n.It is unclear whether an earlier example of the word is shown by the following:1630 J. Winthrop Let. 23 July in Life & Lett. 38 Pease, (sic) puddings & fish, beinge our ordinary diet. In later use popularized by a variant (first attested 1844) of an earlier nursery rhyme (2nd half of 18th cent.) beginning: ‘Pease porridge hot, pease porridge cold..’ (compare pease porridge n. at pease n. Compounds 2a) with porridge replaced by pudding.
A dish of dried peas, usually with various other ingredients, cooked to a pulp.
