Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish pedregal.

Etymology: < Spanish pedregal stony area (1242; 1525 or earlier in Mexican sources), apparently < Spanish piedra stone (see piedra n.) + -eg- (of uncertain origin; compare pedregoso rocky (972)) + -al (apparently showing -al -al suffix¹). Compare Portuguese pedregal (1160), Catalan pedregar (956, also pedrgal), Old Occitan peiregualh (1358; Occitan peiregal, peirigal, peirugal).

In Mexico and the south-western U.S.: a rough and rocky tract, esp. in a volcanic region; an old lava field.
