单词 patho-
释义

patho-comb. form

Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly.
Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek παθο-.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek παθο-, combining form (in e.g. παθογνωμονικός pathognomonic adj., παθολογικός pathologic adj.) of ancient Greek πάθος suffering, disease (see pathos n.).The word first appears in the mid 16th cent. in borrowings from Latin of words ultimately of Greek origin (compare pathopoeia n., pathology n.). Derivative formations corresponding to earlier loanwords occur within English from the mid 17th cent. (e.g. pathologist n.). The earliest fully independent formations appear in the early to mid 19th cent. (compare pathogenetic adj., pathogeny n., pathomania n.). Combined with second elements ultimately of Greek or Latin origin. In French, the corresponding combining form first appears in the 16th cent. in pathologie pathology n. and its derivative pathologique pathologic adj.; the first native formations are apparently from the very end of the 18th cent. and the 19th cent. (compare pathogénie pathogeny n., pathogénique pathogenic adj.). In German, the corresponding combining form first appears in the 18th cent. (compare Pathologie pathology n., Pathognomik (1778: see quot. 1789 at pathognomy n. 1), Pathogenie pathogeny n.).
