Etymology: < post-classical Latin patricidium action of killing one's father (late 4th cent.; in Vetus Latina as a variant reading) < classical Latin patricīda patricide n.2 + -ium (see -y suffix4); compare -cide comb. form2. Compare Italian patricidio (1330 or earlier, now rare), Spanish patricidio (1613 or earlier, rare). Compare earlier parricide n.1 and later matricide n.2
The action of killing one's father; an instance of this. Also: betrayal of one's country.In quot. 1576 distinguished from parricide, which was formerly used to refer to the killing of any near relative.

Etymology: < classical Latin patricīda < patri- patri- comb. form + -cīda -cide comb. form1, in most cases a later alteration or manuscript variant of parricīda parricide n.1, associating the word more explicitly with pater father (or, sometimes, with patria ); in one instances, Cicero De Domo 10 §28, standard editions and dictionaries read patricīda (which occurs in one manuscript, while three have parricīda ). Compare Italian patricida (end of the 13th cent. or earlier, now rare), Spanish patricida (late 14th cent. or earlier), Portuguese patricida (15th cent.). Compare slightly later matricide n.1
