Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin patr- , pater ; Greek πατρ- , πατήρ ; -ist suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin patr-, pater father (see pater n.2) or ancient Greek πατρ-, πατήρ father (see father n.) + -ist suffix, after patristics n. Compare post-classical Latin patrista person who follows the doctrine of the Fathers of the Church (16th cent. in an apparently isolated attestation). Compare patristic n.
