Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin patrissāt-, patrissāre.
Etymology: < classical Latin patrissāt-, past participial stem (compare -ate suffix3) of patrissāre (only early (Plautus, Terence, 2nd cent. b.c.) and late (Apuleius, 2nd cent. a.d.)), in post-classical Latin also patrizare (5th cent.) to act like or take after one's father, as if < Greek πατρίζειν (only recorded in Latin context (6th cent.); compare Hellenistic Greek πατριάζειν in this sense) < ancient Greek πατρ- , πατήρ father (see father n.) + -ίζειν -ize suffix.
Obsolete. rare.
intransitive. To take after or to follow the example of one's father or ancestors.
