Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin patrōcinium.
Etymology: < classical Latin patrōcinium patronage, defence < patrōnus patron n. + -cinium , suffix forming nouns denoting an activity or profession, of unknown origin (compare patrōcinārī patrocinate v. for a parallel verbal formation); compare -y suffix4. Compare Old Occitan patrocin lawyer's fee (?15th cent., also as patroceni, patrocini), Catalan patrocini (1401), Spanish patrocinio (1377–99), Italian patrocinio (14th cent.). N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (pătrǫ·sini) /pəˈtrɒsɪnɪ/.
