Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin pedārius , -an suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin pedārius of lower rank, also as noun, denoting a senator of lower rank (see pedary n. and adj.) + -an suffix; compare -arian suffix. In quot. 1720 at sense A. after French †pedaire (1719 in an apparently isolated attestation in the passage translated). Compare earlier pedary adj. N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (pĭə·riăn) /pɪˈdɛərɪən/.

Of or belonging to a lower rank of the Roman senate, who were not permitted to speak but could physically side with those they supported. Also in extended use.
