Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin pedātūra.
Etymology: < classical Latin pedātūra area or space measured in feet, in post-classical Latin in military use denoting an area in camp to be measured or a part of the fortifications to be built by a certain number of soldiers (3rd cent.) < ped- , pēs foot (see -ped comb. form); the second element may represent -ātūra in quadātūra quadrature n.; compare also mēnsūra measure n.
Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
An allotment of work measured in feet. Cf. footage n. 2.
