释义

peddern.

Brit. /ˈpɛdə/, U.S. /ˈpɛdər/
Forms: early Middle English peoddare (south-western), early Middle English peoddere (south-western), Middle English pedare, Middle English peddare, Middle English peddere, Middle English peder, Middle English– pedder, 1700s peddar; English regional (northern) 1800s pethur, 1800s– pethar, 1800s– pether; Scottish pre-1700 peddar, pre-1700 peder, pre-1700 pethar, pre-1700 1700s– pedder, pre-1700 1800s peddir, 1800s pether, 1800s pethir, 1800s pethirt.
Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin pedārius.
Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps < classical Latin pedārius of lower rank (see pedary adj.). Compare ped n.1, which is first attested later, and may be a back-formation from the present word. Compare also pedlar n.1Earliest attested as a surname. See E. Ekwall Eng. River-names (1928) 321 for a suggestion of possible earlier occurrence in the place name Pedracomba (1086), although this is very uncertain.
Now British regional.
A person who carries goods about for sale; a pedlar.
