Forms: 1600s paddee, 1600s pedie, 1600s pediese (Scottish, plural), 1600s pedy, 1600s–1700s pedee, 1600s– pee-dee (chiefly in sense 2), 1700s– P.D. (in sense 2).
Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin ped-, pēs, pede.
Etymology: Origin uncertain; several early writers associate the word with classical Latin ped-, pēs foot (see -ped comb. form), pede on foot (compare also pedes a person who goes on foot: see pedestrial adj.), pedisequus pediseque n.In sense 2 apparently reinterpreted as the initials P.D.
Now English regional (Northumberland) and rare.
