Etymology: < peat n.1 + pot n.2Much earlier currency is perhaps implied by the place name Petepottes (c1220: see peat n.1), although this is very much earlier than the earliest contextual examples of pot n.2
Chiefly Scottish and English regional (north.).
A hole from which peats have been cut, esp. one in which water has collected.

A plant pot made of dried peat, used esp. for growing seedlings, cuttings, etc., so that they may be planted out without being removed from the pot.
