Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish basto.
Etymology: < Spanish basto (1627), apparently a specific use of the singular of bastos (the suit of) clubs (see baston n., and compare discussion at that entry). Compare earlier baston n. 5, and also later baste n.2
Cards. Now chiefly historical.
In ombre and quadrille: the ace of clubs, being the third highest trump.
