Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French peau d'orange.
Etymology: < French peau d'orange, literally ‘orange peel’ (the medical sense is apparently attributed to A. Nélaton (1807–73) in Nouveau dict. de méd. et de chirurgie pratiques (1875) XXI. 569, and arose on account of the resemblance to the pitted surface of an orange) < peau (see pell n.1) + de de prep. + orange orange n.1
Medicine.
1. Thickening and pitting of an area of skin, usually resulting from oedema or lymphoedema, typically in association with breast cancer.
