Any of several North American plants of the family Fabaceae ( Leguminosae), mostly of a climbing or twining habit, including the American vetch, Vicia americana, the hog peanut, Amphicarpaea bracteata, and various lupins (genus Lupinus) and vetchlings (genus Lathyrus); esp. (U.S. regional (southern)) the black-eyed pea, Vigna sinensis, used for fodder and silage. Also (rare): either of two plants of the family Convolvulaceae, the hedge bindweed, Calystegia sepium, and the wild potato vine, Ipomoea pandurata (b) The climbing stem and foliage of the cultivated pea, Pisum sativum; a pea plant.
