Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin periphrasticus; Greek περιϕραστικός.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin periphrasticus (c700, c990 in British sources) or medieval Greek περιϕραστικός periphrastic (12th cent.) < Hellenistic Greek περιϕράζειν (see periphrasis n.) + ancient Greek -τικός , suffix forming adjectives from verbs. Compare French périphrastique (1555 in Middle French in an apparently isolated attestation; subsequently from 1838 in general sense and in grammatical sense). Compare earlier periphrastical adj.
Characterized by, relating to, or involving periphrasis; circumlocutory.
