Etymology: < scientific Latin peristaphylinus (1704 as peristaphilinus ) < peri- peri- prefix + ancient Greek σταϕυλή bunch of grapes, swollen uvula (see staphyle n.) + scientific Latin -inus -ine suffix2. Compare French péristaphylin (1740 as péristaphilin).With external peristaphyline muscle n. at main sense compare scientific Latin peristaphilinus externus (1704), French péristaphylin externe (1805 or earlier). With internal peristaphyline muscle n. at main sense compare scientific Latin peristaphilinus internus (1704), péristaphylin interne (1805 or earlier). N.E.D. (1905) gives the pronunciation as (peristæ·filin) /pɛrɪˈstæfɪlɪn/.
