Etymology: Either < Spanish patrona (a1458; feminine form corresponding to patrón patron n.) or < Italian †patrona (late 14th cent. or earlier; feminine form corresponding to †patrone patron n.). Compare Portuguese patrona (16th cent.; feminine form corresponding to patrono patron n.). Compare patroon n.
Obsolete. rare.
A female owner or mistress of slaves in the Levant (eastern Mediterranean). Cf. patroon n. 3.
