Etymology: < Bengali paṭṭā and its cognate Panjabi paṭṭā, and similar forms in neighbouring languages < Sanskrit paṭṭa writing tablet, inscribed deed. N.E.D. (1907) entered this under Pottah with the pronunciation (po·tă) /ˈpəʊtə/, a form which reflects early borrowing from Bengali.

In India: a title deed to a property or piece of land, esp. one which contains an official assessment of the amount of revenue collectable from it. Also: a document given by a landlord to a tenant detailing the amount of rent due and other terms of tenure.
